Leanne Culley – Homebase Collections
A new home base in Napier
Artist and designer Leanne Culy has recently moved her business Homebase into new premises in Hastings Street. Previously run out of her home on Napier hill, Leanne says she chose to set up in the CBD when she stumbled on the “beautiful space” which enticed her into taking the plunge.
“I had been tempted to open a studio space showcasing our art and things we make for a long time, but being an artist you always feel you need to have your studio at home, but I was starting to feel a bit isolated and wanted to share my art with everyone.
“Napier is a compact seaside town that has a lot of atmosphere and people love shopping here. I remember sitting at what is now Bistronomy in Hastings St having a coffee, with the sound of bells chiming from the Cathedral across the road – I really felt like I was in Europe!”
When I’m not working…
My dream day would be to check out a gallery, grab a coffee from Hapi and take a long walk along the waterfront. I also love checking out all the beautiful fountains around the city, doing a shop or lunch at Chantal’s organics, or whiling away some time in Wardinis book shop. The perfect finish to the day is a drink at Bistronomy or a casual fish meal at Hunger Munger.
There are more and more interesting restaurants, shops and galleries opening up in Napier that makes it a unique experience. I think the whole of the Tennyson and Hastings Sts precinct is popping with cafés and shops.
I like that a community is building here, and that it can only become more creative and attract like minded people. Both art lovers and artists can feel that maybe there is a community here and get to know each other. I think this philosophy will grow!
